Cloth diapers and I go a long way back…our relationship started 32 years ago when my mother put me in cloth diapers and subsequently my younger sister. Fast forward to 3.5 years ago to the birth of my first son. I started off with pampers, its what “everyone else” was using and I was none-the-wiser. They were okay, but I was constantly dealing with leaks and those nasty poop explosions out the leg and up the back. Not to mention my new motherly brain was feeling guilty about the amount of space my little boys disposable diapers would be taking up in the landfills.
So when he was 3 months old I heard about g-diapers, actually I saw it on the Today show. Julia Roberts was using them for her twins and I thought the idea of saving waste was fantastic!! G-diapers use a cotton cover with a PUL (waterproof) liner and you place a long rectangle, that feels like a disposable diaper, inside of it that gets flushed down the toilet. I was willing to pay more money for the inserts and I felt good about my decision to start using them.
Well…that lasted about a month or so before I realized that I might as well just use cloth if I was going to be washing covers anyway. I worked with what I had. I used the g-diapers and liners as covers and just folded up some pre-fold diapers, that were given to me for burp-cloths, and placed them in the liner. I used that system for a few months and then moved onto some cheap prowrap covers that I got used on ebay. Cloth diapering started to become really fun and I loved experimenting with different fits and combos for night time, etc. Green Mountain Diapers really taught me the ins and outs of cloth diapering, enough so that I felt like I knew what I was doing.
Looking back, I did amazingly well with the little info I had to work with. Anyone can cloth diaper! I do not know (personally) any other mothers who chose this method of diapering. Where are all of you other cloth diapering mama’s? I think this is the reason there is such a huge online community of people who like cotton more than paper diapers. Honestly, who cares if you do it the “right” way, at first. No one is there to watch you, its your house and your learning experience with your child. Just like disposable diapering, many people who have never changed a baby’s diaper are so intimidated when they become pregnant or babysit for someone. The baby is not going to judge you…lol…just go ahead and start having fun, you and your baby will love it!
